Kongsgaard

Kongsgaard is one of Napa Valley's most individually distinctive small producers, founded by John Kongsgaard in 1996 following his tenure as head winemaker at Newton Vineyard. Kongsgaard and his family farm 14 acres on the slopes of Mount Veeder from which they produce Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, and Viognier in tiny quantities — rarely exceeding 1,500 cases per wine. The Chardonnay is the flagship: made from estate fruit and barrel-fermented in French oak with extended lees ageing, it is widely considered the finest Chardonnay produced in Napa Valley and among California's greatest white wines. The Rule Chardonnay is the second-tier white wine. Across 454 auction lots, the estate averages $148 per bottle with prices reaching $1,434 for the Judge Chardonnay — a prestige selection made in microscopic quantities from the oldest estate vines. Wine Advocate has awarded the estate Chardonnay scores of 96–99 across multiple vintages. Kongsgaard's Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah from Hudson Vineyards are similarly prized but less widely tracked.

Kongsgaard Chardonnay is widely considered the finest Chardonnay made in Napa Valley; Robert Parker awarded it 99 points for the 2002 vintage and Wine Advocate has given it 96–99 across numerous years.
The Judge Chardonnay, a selection from the oldest estate vines, is produced in only 50–100 cases annually and commands auction prices of $500–1,000 per bottle.
John Kongsgaard served as head winemaker at Newton Vineyard before founding his own label in 1996; he co-founded the Arietta label in 1997 with Fritz Hatton, producing blends from Hudson Vineyard in Carneros.
454 auction lots average $148 per bottle with a ceiling of $1,434 — the upper end reflecting Judge Chardonnay and library vintages of Cabernet from exceptional years.

In the Glass

Kongsgaard Chardonnay is a singularly rich, complex California white: roasted stone fruit, crème brûlée, toasted hazelnut, beeswax, and lanolin from extended lees contact with moderate new oak. The wine is full-bodied and unctuous but carries precise mineral acidity from the Mount Veeder elevation. Cabernet Sauvignon shows mountain strength: blackcurrant, graphite, and iron with firm tannins. Syrah from Hudson Vineyard is meaty, smoky, and structured. All wines are profoundly individual.
