La Massa

La Massa is a Chianti Classico estate in the Panzano in Chianti commune, one of the appellation's warmest and most fruit-expressive subzones, owned by Giorgio Motta who purchased the property in 1992 and transformed it into a benchmark for modern, international-leaning Chianti Classico. The estate's flagship, Giorgio Primo, is a Sangiovese-dominant blend with Merlot that averages $59 at auction and the 2007 vintage appears as the reference point; the standard Chianti Classico averages $28. Giorgio Primo's blend philosophy — including international varieties — reflects the estate's deliberate break from DOCG regulations in certain years, leading to IGT classification for some releases. La Massa is consistently associated with the 'modernist' camp in Chianti Classico's stylistic debate: riper fruit, more new oak, and softer tannins than traditionalists like Fontodi or Isole e Olena. The 1996 Chianti Classico appears as a top vintage in the portfolio, a year that demonstrated Panzano's ability to produce age-worthy Sangiovese in the right hands. At 100 lots averaging $45 across the portfolio, La Massa trades as an accessible, quality-focused Chianti Classico with a modern style that appeals to international buyers.

Giorgio Primo, the estate's flagship, blends Sangiovese with Merlot — a departure from pure Sangiovese that caused the wine to be classified as IGT Toscana rather than Chianti Classico DOCG in some vintages.
La Massa is based in Panzano in Chianti, one of the warmest sub-zones of the Chianti Classico DOCG, where the amphitheater-like topography of Conca d'Oro creates consistent ripeness favorable to the modernist style.
The 1996 vintage of the Chianti Classico appears in the auction record — a structurally demanding year that rewarded producers who managed tannins skillfully, and one of the decade's most age-worthy Chianti Classico vintages.
Owner Giorgio Motta purchased La Massa in 1992 with no prior winemaking experience, building the estate's reputation through investment in Burgundian cooperage and yield restriction from the ground up.

In the Glass

Modern Panzano Chianti Classico with generous, Merlot-softened fruit: dark cherry, blackberry, vanilla oak, and dried herbs with medium-full tannins and warmth from the Conca d'Oro microclimate. Less angular and acidic than traditionally made Sangiovese from cooler subzones; more international in style. Giorgio Primo adds depth of chocolate, spice, and structure. The wines drink well young but good examples age 8–15 years.
