La Mondotte

La Mondotte is a 4.5-hectare micro-estate in Saint-Emilion classified as Premier Grand Cru Classe B in the 2012 and 2022 classifications, one of the appellation's most dramatic success stories. The property was owned by the von Neipperg family — also owners of Canon-la-Gaffeliere and Clos de l'Oratoire — but operated anonymously until Stephan von Neipperg developed it as a separate entity in 1996. The 1996 debut vintage attracted immediate critical attention, earning scores above 95 from Robert Parker and establishing La Mondotte as one of Saint-Emilion's garage wine movement icons. The vineyard is planted to approximately 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc on clay-rich soils over iron-encrusted limestone, adjacent to Tertre Roteboeuf and Pavie Macquin on the Saint-Emilion Cotes. Yields are kept extremely low — typically 20–25 hl/ha — and the wine is aged in 100% new French oak. The production is tiny, typically under 15,000 bottles per vintage. At auction, 291 lots trade at an average of $205 per bottle with the 2012 vintage most frequently appearing and peaks reaching $1,554. The 1998, 2000, 2001, 2005, and 2010 are the most coveted library vintages, with 100-point scores from Parker driving significant secondary market premiums. Scarcity, consistent critical acclaim, and the garage wine mystique make La Mondotte a reliable auction performer.

La Mondotte debuted with the 1996 vintage under Stephan von Neipperg and immediately received 98-point scores from Robert Parker, launching the 4.5-hectare micro-estate as one of the seminal wines of the Saint-Emilion garage movement.
Production is extremely limited — typically under 15,000 bottles per vintage — from 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc vines on clay-limestone soils adjacent to Tertre Roteboeuf; yields are held to 20–25 hl/ha.
The 2012 vintage is the most traded year at auction across 291 lots averaging $205 per bottle; the 1998, 2000, 2001, and 2005 vintages have attracted prices toward the $1,554 ceiling for bottles with impeccable provenance.
La Mondotte achieved Premier Grand Cru Classe B status in the 2012 Saint-Emilion reclassification, a ranking maintained in 2022 that validates the estate's ascent from obscure annexe to classified prestige within three decades.

In the Glass

La Mondotte is the archetypal garage wine: massively concentrated Merlot with black plum, roasted coffee, dark chocolate, and an almost opaque density of fruit. The clay-limestone terroir adds iron-inflected mineral structure beneath the hedonistic extraction. 100% new oak contributes vanilla and cedar without overwhelming the fruit in top vintages. The Cabernet Franc portion adds graphite and spice. Built for 15–30 years of cellaring, the wines are almost impenetrable in youth.
