Le Dome

Le Dôme is a micro-négociant Saint-Émilion Grand Cru estate established by Jonathan Maltus in 1996, operating from a tiny parcel near Saint-Émilion village. Maltus, a British entrepreneur who arrived in Bordeaux without wine industry background, built Le Dôme as a garagiste-style wine at a time when the garage wine movement was transforming Saint-Émilion's commercial landscape. The estate is planted primarily to Cabernet Franc (approximately 75–80%) with a Merlot component — an unusually high Cabernet Franc percentage for a Saint-Émilion, chosen to differentiate stylistically from the appellation's Merlot-dominant mainstream. Production is deliberately tiny, typically under 3,000 cases, which creates the scarcity that supports the $192 average auction price across 167 lots. Critical reception has been strong: scores of 93–98 points from Robert Parker and James Suckling in top vintages (2000, 2009, 2010, 2015, 2016) drove early collector demand and sustained auction value. Jonathan Maltus subsequently sold Le Dôme to the Cazes family of Pichon Baron in 2017, a change of ownership that has been closely watched by the wine investment community. The Maltus-era wines (1996–2016) are treated as one category; post-2017 Cazes-era production has maintained quality while expanding resources. At auction, Le Dôme competes in the same tier as other Bordeaux garage wines — above mid-range crus, below the Pétrus/Le Pin stratosphere.

Le Dôme is planted approximately 75–80% to Cabernet Franc — among the highest proportions in Saint-Émilion — setting it apart stylistically from the appellation's dominant Merlot-based wines.
Production averages under 3,000 cases annually, a deliberate scarcity that supports the $192 average auction price — comparable to some second-growth Bordeaux despite no official classification.
The 2000 and 2009 vintages received 96–98 points from Robert Parker and remain the benchmark auction bottles, with prices of $300–600 regularly achieved.
Jonathan Maltus sold the estate to the Cazes family (owners of Lynch-Bages and Pichon Baron) in 2017; the transition has maintained quality while shifting the winemaking philosophy toward the Cazes style.

In the Glass

Cabernet Franc-dominant blend (75–80%) with Merlot, producing an aromatic, graphite-edged Saint-Émilion with violets, blackcurrant, iron, and earthy herbs. More structured and linear than Merlot-dominant appellation peers; fine-grained tannins and vibrant acidity lend excellent aging potential. Iron and chalky minerality from Saint-Émilion limestone soils. Cooler, more Pomerol-like precision than the appellation norm.
