Marcarini

Marcarini is a traditional Barolo estate in La Morra, one of the Langhe's most historically significant communes, with prime parcels in two of the appellation's most celebrated vineyards: Brunate and La Serra. Family-owned since the early 20th century, the domaine has remained committed to the classicist approach — long maceration, large-format Slavonian oak botti, and extended pre-release aging — long after the modernist wave swept through Barolo in the 1980s and encouraged short maceration and barrique usage across much of the zone. Brunate is the flagship, commanding the highest prices and delivering Marcarini's most structured expression. La Serra, on a slightly softer site, offers more approachable Barolo earlier in its evolution but shares the estate's characteristic precision and aromatic depth. The 276-lot auction record averages $90 with a ceiling of $369, placing Marcarini in the respected but accessible tier of classic Barolo — well below trophy producers like Giacosa or Conterno, but consistently reliable and honest for traditionally-minded collectors. The 1996 vintage's dominance in trading activity reflects both its exceptional quality and the broader collector consensus that it represents the finest Barolo harvest of the 1990s — wines still evolving and rewarding patient collectors who cellared bottles from the mid-1990s.

Marcarini holds prime parcels in both Brunate and La Serra — two of La Morra's most historically important Barolo crus.
1996 is the top auction vintage, widely regarded as the finest Barolo year of the 1990s for structure and longevity.
The estate practices traditional vinification: long maceration in Slavonian oak botti, with 5+ years of aging before release.
276 total auction lots averaging $90, with a $369 ceiling on top vintages of Brunate Barolo in large format.

In the Glass

Marcarini Barolo from Brunate and La Serra is classic La Morra Nebbiolo — tar, dried rose, red cherry, tobacco, and dried herbs with characteristic floral lift. The La Morra terroir yields a more textural, feminine character than the iron-driven Serralunga wines. Both crus require 10–15 years of bottle age before softening; Brunate particularly rewards long cellaring for its layered complexity and persistent finish.
