Massolino

Massolino is a historic Serralunga d'Alba estate producing Barolo from four of the commune's most distinguished crus: Margheria, Parafada, Vigna Rionda, and the Riserva bottling from Vigna Rionda's oldest vines. The estate was founded by Giovanni Massolino in 1896 and is currently managed by the fourth generation of the family. Serralunga d'Alba soils — compact Helvetian marl and clay — produce Barolo of maximum tannic structure and longevity, distinct from the more fragrant, earlier-drinking styles of La Morra. The Vigna Rionda is one of Barolo's most celebrated single-vineyard sites, and Massolino's Riserva from this parcel — aged 5 years in large Slavonian oak — is the estate's crowning achievement. Across 430 auction lots, the estate averages $146 per bottle with prices reaching $1,046. The 2010, 2013, and 2016 vintages from Vigna Rionda have earned scores of 96–99 from Burghound and Vinous.

Vigna Rionda is widely considered one of Barolo's greatest single-vineyard sites; Massolino has farmed it since 1896 and produces both a standard Barolo and a Riserva from the oldest vines in the parcel.
The Massolino Barolo Vigna Rionda Riserva is aged 5 years in large Slavonian oak botti and has earned scores of 97–99 from Burghound in benchmark vintages including 2010 and 2013.
Serralunga d'Alba's compact Helvetian soils produce Barolo of exceptional tannic structure; Massolino's four-cru portfolio from Margheria, Parafada, Vigna Rionda, and the standard Serralunga bottling demonstrates this appellation signature consistently.
430 auction lots average $146 per bottle, with the Riserva Vigna Rionda commanding $300–600 per bottle — among the top tier for Serralunga-sourced Barolos.

In the Glass

Massolino Barolo is quintessential Serralunga: dried rose, tar, anise, iron, and sour red cherry with the commune's signature dense, grippy tannins and high acidity. Margheria shows slightly more fragrance and red fruit; Parafada is broader and earthier; Vigna Rionda combines all these elements with the greatest concentration and mineral depth. The Riserva demands 20+ years. Even the standard Barolo benefits from 10 years of cellaring before approaching full expression.
