Mastrojanni

Mastrojanni is a Brunello di Montalcino estate on the southeastern slopes of the Montalcino hill near Sant'Angelo in Colle, farming approximately 35 hectares in one of the appellation's warmest, most Mediterranean-influenced subzones. The estate was founded in 1975 by Bruno Mastrojanni and has been owned since 2012 by the Illy family (of Illycaffe fame), who invested significantly in winery infrastructure and vineyard management. The southeast-facing slopes at 200-350 meters produce Brunello of exceptional concentration and approachability. Vigna Loreto, a single-vineyard selection from the estate's most prized block, is the premium tier. At auction, 139 lots have traded at an average of $110, ranging from $31 to $615. The Brunello averages $123 across 47 lots; Vigna Loreto averages $76 across 19 lots; Rosso averages $113 across 7 lots. James Suckling has awarded Mastrojanni scores of 95-98 for top vintages including 2010, 2015, and 2016.

Mastrojanni's southeastern Montalcino slopes near Sant'Angelo in Colle produce some of the appellation's most hedonistic Brunello — richer and more approachable than cooler northern sites.
Since 2012, the Illy family (Illycaffe) has owned the estate, investing in precision viticulture and winemaking infrastructure while maintaining the southeast-facing single-estate identity.
The estate Brunello di Montalcino averages $123 at auction, with benchmark vintages (2010, 2015, 2016) receiving 95-98 points from James Suckling and reaching the $615 ceiling.
Vigna Loreto single-vineyard selection averages $76 — lower than the estate Brunello — an unusual inversion reflecting collector preference for the estate's primary label over the vineyard tier at auction.

In the Glass

Southeast Montalcino Brunello di Montalcino: ripe cherry, plum, leather, tobacco, and Mediterranean garrigue from the warm slopes near Sant'Angelo in Colle. More generously fruited and approachable in youth than northern Montalcino counterparts. Tannins are substantial but ripe. Vigna Loreto adds extra concentration and dark fruit density. All wines develop tertiary complexity — dried fruit, cedar, spice — with 10-15 years aging.
