Mayacamas

Mayacamas Vineyards is one of California's most historically important estates, situated on the volcanic soils of Mount Veeder at elevations between 2,000 and 2,400 feet above the Napa Valley floor. Founded in 1889, the estate was restored by Bob and Nonie Travers beginning in 1968, who produced a series of legendary mountain Cabernet Sauvignons and Chardonnays that became benchmarks for age-worthy California wine. The 1971, 1974, and 1985 Cabernet Sauvignons in particular are considered among the greatest California wines ever produced, capable of developing for 30–50 years. The winery was acquired by Bob and Erika Staglin (of Staglin Family Vineyard) in 2013, who have preserved the old-vine estate and traditional winemaking approach. At auction, Mayacamas spans an enormous range: 257 lots from $10 to $2,000, averaging $209 per bottle. The Cabernet Sauvignon is the primary auction driver, with old-vine estate fruit and mountain tannin structure supporting exceptional longevity. The Chardonnay, made in an austere, high-acid Mount Veeder style, has also attracted collectors seeking alternatives to the opulent valley-floor California Chardonnay archetype. The Late Harvest Zinfandel is a historical curiosity with collector appeal. Bottles from the Travers era (1968–2013) in excellent provenance are increasingly difficult to source, a scarcity dynamic that directly supports the premium commanded by pre-acquisition Mayacamas at auction relative to comparable mountain Napa producers.

Mayacamas' 1971 and 1974 Cabernet Sauvignons are considered benchmark California wines capable of 50-year development; both wines demonstrated extraordinary vitality in tastings conducted 30–40 years after harvest.
The estate's volcanic Mount Veeder soils at 2,000–2,400 feet elevation produce wines with tannin structures and acidity levels fundamentally different from valley-floor Napa — a distinction that gives Mayacamas its unique aging trajectory.
Auction prices reach $2,000 per bottle, driven primarily by large-format bottles and pristine examples of 1970s and 1980s Cabernet Sauvignon from the Travers era — wines increasingly difficult to source in original condition.
Bob and Erika Staglin's 2013 acquisition preserved the estate's old vines and traditional approach, which has maintained collector confidence that recent vintages will develop comparably to the Travers-era classics.

In the Glass

Mount Veeder Cabernet Sauvignon with a strikingly austere, tannic profile: blackcurrant, dried herb, iron, volcanic mineral, and tobacco with restrained fruit expression in youth. High acidity and dense, firm tannins demand 15–20 years of aging to integrate. With time, develops extraordinary complexity: cedar, dried fruit, earth, and graphite. The Chardonnay mirrors this — lean, stony, and high-acid, more Chablis-like than California Chardonnay typical.
