Opus One

Opus One was the first internationally branded luxury wine in California and remains one of the most widely traded Napa Valley wines at auction — a joint venture between Robert Mondavi and Baron Philippe de Rothschild of Château Mouton Rothschild, conceived at a 1970 dinner in Hawaii and first produced as 'Napamedoc' in 1979. The first commercial release under the Opus One name was the 1984 vintage, priced at $50 per bottle — an extraordinary sum for a California wine at the time and a deliberate statement of intent. The estate farms 170 acres of biodynamically certified vineyards in Oakville, the heart of Napa Valley Cabernet country. The blend is consistently Cabernet Sauvignon-dominant (approximately 75–80%), with Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec, and Petit Verdot completing the Bordeaux-inspired assemblage. Michael Silacci has served as winemaker since 2001, maintaining the estate's combination of Bordeaux structure and California richness. Opus One's gravity-flow winery, opened in 1991 and designed by Scott Johnson, is one of Napa Valley's most architecturally ambitious buildings — a crescent-shaped structure embedded in the earth. Production averages 25,000 cases per year — significantly larger than the cult estates of Screaming Eagle and Harlan, making Opus One the most widely available premium Napa wine at auction. The second label, Overture, is produced from younger vines and available only at the winery.

Opus One was the first major transatlantic wine venture: Robert Mondavi and Baron Philippe de Rothschild's handshake deal in 1970 created a wine that was simultaneously Californian and Bordelais in ambition — the first wine anywhere to be marketed explicitly as a luxury global brand.
The 1984 first commercial release of Opus One was priced at $50 per bottle — more than double any existing California wine — a deliberate positioning that established the concept of premium pricing for California Cabernet as a viable commercial strategy.
Opus One's 170-acre biodynamically certified Oakville estate is one of the largest and most valuable single-contiguous vineyard blocks in Napa Valley, certified Demeter biodynamic since 2011 — one of the first major California estates to achieve biodynamic certification.
At 25,000 cases per year, Opus One is the most widely distributed luxury Napa wine in the world, making it the most accessible entry point into the Oakville premium market and the most consistently available Napa wine at auction in both volume and geographic distribution.

In the Glass

Opus One is Napa Cabernet with a Bordeaux sensibility: structured, classic, and built for ageing rather than immediate pleasure. Blackcurrant, cassis, cedar, and dark chocolate on the nose, with firm but polished tannins and a long mineral finish. The Bordeaux varieties in the blend add complexity and freshness; the Oakville fruit adds California's characteristic richness and body. Great vintages (2007, 2013, 2016, 2019) reward 15–20 years of cellaring.
