Paolo Scavino

Paolo Scavino, based in Castiglione Falletto, is one of the most respected Barolo producers of the modern era—the estate that effectively bridged traditional Nebbiolo winemaking and the modernist revolution of the 1980s and 1990s under Enrico Scavino. His shift to shorter macerations and smaller French oak casks produced wines with more immediately approachable tannins without sacrificing longevity. The flagship Bric Fiasc from a single 3-hectare vineyard in Castiglione Falletto remains the estate's most coveted wine. Carobric, the multi-vineyard blend, represents excellent value within the portfolio. With 1,020 lots averaging $117 per bottle and prices reaching $1,599, Scavino occupies a premium but accessible Barolo tier. Top auction vintages include 2016, 2013, 2010, 2006, and 2001. Enrico's daughters Enrica and Elisa now lead the estate, maintaining quality while expanding the MGA single-vineyard lineup with Ravera, Bricco Ambrogio, and Rocche dell'Annunziata. This generation has shifted toward longer macerations, reflecting current aesthetic preferences in Barolo.

Bric Fiasc, a 3-hectare single vineyard in Castiglione Falletto planted in 1960, consistently achieves 96–100 point scores in top vintages and averages above $200 per bottle at auction—the estate's most sought-after wine and a benchmark for the appellation.
Enrico Scavino pioneered the use of roto-fermenters in Barolo in the 1980s, reducing maceration times from 30–60 days to 7–14 days—a modernist technique he later moved away from as consumer preferences shifted back toward traditional structure.
The estate now vinifies six separate MGA-designated single-vineyard Barolos (Bric Fiasc, Cannubi, Monvigliero, Bricco Ambrogio, Ravera, Rocche dell'Annunziata), one of the most comprehensive single-vineyard portfolios from any one Barolo producer.
Carobric, the estate's Barolo blend assembled from various commune holdings, averages around $70–80 per bottle at auction—roughly half the price of Bric Fiasc and Cannubi—making it one of the better-value entry points into serious Barolo.

In the Glass

Classic Castiglione Falletto Nebbiolo: dried roses, tar, licorice, and red cherry on Bric Fiasc; darker and more structured on Cannubi with added minerals and tobacco. Monvigliero from Verduno tends toward floral and perfumed character. Carobric blends savory and fruit-forward elements for early accessibility. The style is cleaner and more polished than traditionalist peers—precise tannins, focused fruit—while maintaining Barolo's signature austerity and aging depth.
