Philip Togni

Philip Togni Vineyard is a mountain estate on Spring Mountain in Napa Valley, established by Philip Togni in 1983 following his long career as winemaker at Chappellet, Cuvaison, and other Napa properties. Togni, one of Napa Valley's most respected winemakers, produces a single flagship Cabernet Sauvignon from his steep, terraced estate vineyard at 2,000 feet elevation — a wine of legendary longevity and European discipline. The Tanbark Hill Vineyard wine represents a second tier from a nearby site. Philip Togni Cabernet Sauvignon is typically produced from 85–90% Cabernet Sauvignon with small percentages of Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot, aged in French oak with a moderate proportion of new barrels. Across 440 auction lots, the estate averages $169 per bottle with prices reaching $2,271. Wine Advocate has awarded Philip Togni Cabernet scores of 92–98 across multiple decades, with vintages including 1994, 2001, 2002, and 2013 representing the estate's finest work.

Philip Togni established his Spring Mountain estate in 1983 after serving as winemaker at Chappellet, Cuvaison, and other major Napa estates throughout the 1960s and 1970s.
The estate vineyard sits at 2,000 feet elevation on Spring Mountain, producing Cabernet Sauvignon of exceptional structure and longevity; Wine Advocate awarded the 1994 vintage 97 points.
Production is approximately 1,500–2,000 cases annually across all cuvées, almost entirely from the estate's own mountain-terraced vines — making this a genuinely terroir-specific California Cabernet.
440 auction lots average $169 per bottle with a ceiling of $2,271, reflecting sustained collector demand for one of Napa's most age-worthy and intellectually serious Cabernet Sauvignons.

In the Glass

Philip Togni Cabernet Sauvignon is disciplined and austere: blackcurrant, cedar, dried herb, graphite, and iron with firm, grippy mountain tannins and elevated acidity from the Spring Mountain elevation. The style is more European than hedonistic — less extracted and less oaky than contemporary Napa, with a mineral edge that recalls fine Bordeaux. The wine is strictly unapproachable for its first decade, demands 15 years minimum, and at its best resembles a great Médoc cru classé in complexity and longevity.
