Pian dell'Orino

Pian dell'Orino is a small, biodynamically farmed Brunello di Montalcino estate run by Caroline Pobitzer and Jan Erbach, a German-Italian partnership that took over the property at the end of the 1990s. The domaine farms approximately 6 hectares of Sangiovese on the southwestern slopes of the Montalcino hill, an area known for producing structured, robust Brunello with more power than the northern sites. Under Pobitzer and Erbach, Pian dell'Orino converted to biodynamics early in the 2000s and has gained significant international recognition for a terroir-expressive, traditionally-structured style. The Vigneti del Versante is the flagship single-vineyard Brunello, produced from the oldest vines on the estate's southernmost parcels. The standard Brunello di Montalcino and Rosso di Montalcino round out the portfolio, with Bassolino Sopra offering a different expression from a distinct vineyard section. Across 249 lots averaging $112 per bottle — ranging from $36 to $523 — the domaine trades at a premium to generic Brunello but below the absolute top tier (Biondi-Santi Riserva, Giacomo Conterno Monfortino equivalent). The $523 ceiling reflects magnums of Vigneti del Versante from acclaimed vintages like 2010 or 2015. International critics have regularly awarded Pian dell'Orino wines 93–97 points. Both Pobitzer and Erbach bring an outsider perspective that has arguably been an asset — their commitment to biodynamics and traditional Brunello structure resists the commercial pressure toward earlier-drinking, internationally-styled wines that has affected some larger Montalcino estates.

Pian dell'Orino is certified biodynamic, one of a small number of Brunello producers committed to this approach — a distinction that has attracted the attention of natural wine enthusiasts and collectors seeking authenticity-focused producers.
The Vigneti del Versante single-vineyard Brunello, sourced from the estate's oldest and southernmost vines, is the flagship auction wine, reaching $523 per bottle in magnum from acclaimed vintages.
The southwestern Montalcino terroir produces Brunello with more structure and power than the northern zone, and Pian dell'Orino's long maceration and large botti aging amplify this character — making the wines demanding in youth but exceptional with 10–20 years of cellaring.
With auction averages of $112 per bottle, Pian dell'Orino offers compelling value relative to its critical acclaim; comparative Brunello producers with similar scores from Biondi-Santi or Casanova di Neri trade at 3–5x these levels.

In the Glass

Southwestern Montalcino Sangiovese Grosso: concentrated dark cherry, dried fig, tobacco, leather, and iron-mineral. More full-bodied than northern Brunello, with higher tannin extraction and a robust structure. Biodynamic farming contributes aromatic precision and energy. Long maceration preserves the tannin framework essential for development. With aging (10–20 years), the wine develops dried rose, truffle, tobacco, and forest floor complexity. Rosso di Montalcino offers an earlier-drinking, lighter-structured preview.
