Poggio Antico

Poggio Antico is a large Brunello di Montalcino estate with origins in the late 1980s, covering approximately 30 hectares of Sangiovese under vine on a high plateau southwest of Montalcino at elevations of 550–600 meters. The altitude and southwestern exposure create a cooler, more aromatic Brunello style compared to the warmer southeastern slopes; the estate's wines are marked by a liftedness and floral character that differentiates them from the denser, richer production of estates near Castelnuovo dell'Abate. The portfolio spans three tiers: the standard Brunello di Montalcino, the Riserva, and the Altero — a Sangiovese IGT produced in some of the estate's most exceptional years using barrique rather than large-format oak. At auction, the standard Brunello averages $63 across 108 lots, the Riserva averages $107 across 40 lots, and the Altero averages $110 across 48 lots. The 1997 Altero is among the estate's most celebrated library bottles. Total portfolio activity spans 284 lots averaging $91, with a ceiling of $400 for exceptional Riserva and Altero vintages from the best years. The estate was acquired by Marilisa Allegrini of the Valpolicella Allegrini family in 2012, who has maintained quality while bringing financial stability and renewed international distribution attention to a property that had been undermarketed relative to its actual production standard.

Poggio Antico farms approximately 30 hectares at 550–600 meters elevation on Montalcino's southwestern plateau — among the appellation's highest and coolest sites — producing a distinctly aromatic, floral Brunello style.
The Altero, a Sangiovese IGT aged in French barriques rather than large Slavonian casks, averages $110 across 48 auction lots; the 1997 vintage is the estate's most acclaimed Altero and commands prices at the portfolio's $400 ceiling.
Marilisa Allegrini of Valpolicella's Allegrini family acquired Poggio Antico in 2012, maintaining the estate's three-tier production structure — Brunello, Riserva, and Altero — while bringing financial stability following a period of ownership uncertainty.
The Riserva averages $107 versus $63 for the standard Brunello, a 70% premium at auction reflecting extended aging requirements (minimum 6 years) and selection from the estate's best-performing vineyard blocks.

In the Glass

Poggio Antico Brunello reflects its high-altitude southwestern site: red cherry, wild strawberry, and dried rose petals dominate over the riper plum notes found in lower-elevation Montalcino. Iron and mineral earth provide structural backbone, with dried herbs and sage adding aromatic complexity. The Altero introduces a more velvety, barrique-influenced texture with spice and vanilla accents. All wines maintain Sangiovese's characteristic high acidity and firm tannin structure requiring 10–20 years to fully resolve.
