Poggio di Sotto

Poggio di Sotto is widely regarded as one of the two or three finest Brunello producers in Montalcino, producing wines of extraordinary purity and longevity from 14 hectares of organically farmed vineyards on the southwestern slopes of the appellation near Castelnuovo dell'Abate. Founded in 1989 by Pier Luigi Polla and acquired by ColleMassari in 2011, the domaine maintains traditional Brunello production: extended maceration, aging in large Slavonian oak casks for three or more years, and release only after full maturation. The Brunello di Montalcino averages $221 per bottle across 164 lots with the 2006 vintage most-traded. The Riserva—produced only in exceptional years—averages $421 across 75 lots, with the 2010 the reference year. Prices reach $2,629 for the rarest Riserva lots. Total volume: 362 lots at $286 average—among the highest per-bottle averages for any Brunello producer. The 2010 Riserva is widely considered one of the finest Brunello ever produced.

In the Glass

Sangiovese Grosso of extraordinary purity and terroir transparency: dried cherry, violet, dried rose, iron ore, tobacco, and earthy mineral on a medium-full body with silky, age-worthy tannins. The Riserva adds depth, complexity, and remarkable aromatic persistence—secondary notes of leather, dried orange peel, and truffle emerging with a decade of cellaring. The southwesterly slope produces wines with warmth and structural elegance simultaneously.
