Prunotto

Prunotto is one of Piedmont's oldest and most historically significant négociants, founded in Alba in 1904 and best known for single-vineyard Barolo from the prestigious Bussia cru in Monforte d'Alba and Cannubi in Barolo village. The house was acquired by Antinori in 1989, which modernized production while preserving the traditional varietal range. The auction database reflects a broad chronological span: the oldest wine is a 1947 Barolo trading at an average of $140 (51 lots), and Riserva bottlings from 1957 and 1967 average $175 and $213 respectively, confirming the longevity of traditional-styled Nebbiolo. Bussia is the flagship among modern releases, averaging $129 across 39 lots with the 1999 vintage most active. The standard Barolo averages $140, reflecting collector interest in mid-tier Piedmont labels with a long track record. Supporting wines include Barbaresco ($143, 17 lots) and Montestefano cru ($107, 9 lots), as well as the easy-drinking Barbera Bric Turot. Total auction volume of 397 lots at $115 average positions Prunotto as an accessible point of entry into aged Piedmont wines, with prices topping at $738.

In the Glass

Classic Nebbiolo from the Langhe: dried rose, tar, iron, and orange peel on a medium-full frame with firm, drying tannins. Bussia and Cannubi crus add dark cherry and licorice depth. Riserva bottlings show tertiary complexity—leather, forest floor, dried tobacco—that develops over decades. Barbaresco is slightly less austere with more red fruit and softer tannins.
