Raymond

Raymond Vineyards is a Napa Valley estate founded in 1971 by Roy Raymond Sr. and his sons Roy Jr. and Walter, whose family had connections to Beringer through marriage. The winery occupies a position in the mid-Napa hierarchy: serious enough to command collector attention for older vintages of the Private Reserve and Generations Cabernets, but not in the ultra-premium tier. The estate was acquired by Jean-Charles Boisset in 2009, bringing the Raymond brand into the Boisset Collection portfolio. The flagship wines are the Generations Cabernet Sauvignon and the Private Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon, both St. Helena and Rutherford fruit, with the Reserve Selection serving the volume tier. Across 260 lots averaging $58 per bottle — ranging from $1 to $338 — the domaine demonstrates that its auction value lies principally in older, pre-Boisset vintages of the Generations and Private Reserve rather than recent releases. Bottles from the 1970s and early 1980s made by Roy Raymond appear at auction as historical Napa documents. The Sommelier Selection and standard Cabernet Sauvignon contribute volume at sub-$50 price points, pulling the average down. The $338 price ceiling reflects large-format magnums or rare single bottles of older Generations vintages in exceptional condition. The Boisset acquisition brought additional resources and broader distribution but also separated the winery from its original family ownership structure, a factor that some longtime collectors cite when valuing Raymond's auction lots.

Raymond Vineyards was founded in 1971 by the Raymond family with direct ties to Beringer's viticultural tradition, giving older vintages particular historical significance in the Napa Valley story.
The Generations Cabernet Sauvignon, produced from Rutherford and St. Helena fruit, is the auction-driving label, with prices reaching $338 per bottle for large-format or exceptional older vintages.
Jean-Charles Boisset's 2009 acquisition modernized Raymond's winery infrastructure and marketing but is associated by some collectors with a stylistic evolution away from the more classic character of Raymond-family vintages.
Auction averages of $58 per bottle across 260 lots place Raymond in accessible territory for everyday Napa Cabernet drinkers, while the private reserve tier offers genuine cellaring potential for under $150.

In the Glass

Rutherford and St. Helena Cabernet Sauvignon with classic Napa mid-palate weight: blackcurrant, blackberry, ripe plum, and cassis with vanilla oak, cedar, and the characteristic Rutherford dust. Medium-full body with supple tannins and moderate acidity. Private Reserve and Generations show more structure and dark fruit intensity than the entry-tier wines. Ages well at the top level but the Reserve Selection is designed for earlier consumption.
