Robert Biale

Robert Biale Vineyards is one of California's premier Zinfandel specialists, founded by Aldo Biale and his son Bob in 1991 in Napa Valley. The estate built its reputation on old-vine Zinfandel from named single-vineyard sites including Black Chicken (the flagship), Old Pato Ranch, Aldo's Vineyard, and Old Kraft Ranch — many featuring Zinfandel vines planted in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The Black Chicken cuvée takes its name from a code used by Aldo Biale to sell homemade wine during Prohibition. At auction, the estate's wines average $36 per bottle across 127 lots, with the range from $1 to $98 reflecting the very modest pricing of even the top cuvées. The Royal Punishers Petite Sirah adds a different varietal dimension. Biale's Zinfandels are among Napa Valley's most age-worthy examples of the variety, built for structure rather than the overripe jammy style that dominated in the 1990s and 2000s. The estate sources from some of Napa Valley's most historic vineyards, with vine age a key quality differentiator.

The Black Chicken vineyard Zinfandel references Aldo Biale's Prohibition-era code name for selling homemade wine, linking the estate to Napa's early 20th-century viticultural heritage.
Many of Biale's vineyard sources contain Zinfandel vines planted in the 1880s–1920s — vine age that concentrates flavor and produces naturally lower yields.
127 auction lots average $36 per bottle, making Biale one of the most accessible serious Napa Valley producers in the auction database.
The Royal Punishers Petite Sirah, from old-vine Petite Sirah, complements the Zinfandel focus with a dense, age-worthy red of similar old-vine pedigree.

In the Glass

Biale's old-vine Napa Zinfandels are rich but structured, showing blackberry, briar, pepper, tobacco, and a distinctive iron/mineral quality from Napa's volcanic and gravelly soils. Unlike overripe California Zin, Biale's wines retain acidity and tannic grip. The Black Chicken is more polished; Old Pato and Aldo's are wilder and more rustic. The Petite Sirah is dense, inky, and tannic.
