Rocche Dei Manzoni

Rocche dei Manzoni is a Barolo estate in Monforte d'Alba founded by Valentino Migliorini in 1974, representing one of the pioneering estates of the Barolo modernist movement. Migliorini was an early adopter of French barrique ageing and new winemaking techniques, producing Barolo and Dolcetto that sat outside traditional Langhe conventions. The estate's flagship wines include Vigna Roul Barolo (from the Roul vineyard in Monforte d'Alba), Pianpolvere Soprano Riserva 7 Anni (aged 7 years in a combination of large casks and barriques), and Cappella di Santo Stefano (a Chardonnay-Pinot Nero blend in Champagne method). Across 409 auction lots, the estate averages $202 per bottle with prices reaching $923. The use of 7-year ageing for the Pianpolvere Soprano Riserva is exceptional even by Riserva standards. Top vintages of Vigna Roul and Pianpolvere from 2010, 2013, and 2016 have earned scores of 94–97 from Wine Advocate.

Valentino Migliorini was one of Barolo's earliest modernist producers, adopting French barrique ageing in the 1970s before the movement became controversial in the 1990s debates between traditionalists and modernists.
Pianpolvere Soprano Riserva 7 Anni is aged for a full seven years — four in cask and three in bottle — before release, making it one of Barolo's most extensively aged Riserva expressions.
Cappella di Santo Stefano, a traditional-method sparkling wine from Chardonnay and Pinot Nero, demonstrates the estate's range beyond Nebbiolo and is considered one of Piedmont's finest sparkling wines.
409 auction lots average $202 per bottle, driven upward by the scarce Pianpolvere Soprano Riserva and older library vintages of Vigna Roul; standard Barolo cuvées are more accessible.

In the Glass

Rocche dei Manzoni Barolos show the modernist signature of Monforte d'Alba: darker fruit than northern communes, with black cherry, dark plum, chocolate, spice, and cedar from barrique influence alongside Nebbiolo's classic rose and iron. Vigna Roul is the most structured; Pianpolvere Soprano shows extraordinary complexity from its 7-year ageing. Cappella di Santo Stefano is toasty, mineral, and elegant. The Dolcetto is plummy and approachable. Overall the portfolio leans rich and modern.
