Storybook Mountain Vineyards is a specialist Zinfandel producer in the Mayacamas Mountains above Calistoga in Napa Valley, established in 1976 by Jerry Seps, a former English professor, who purchased an 1880s winery built into the hillside. The estate focuses almost exclusively on Zinfandel grown at elevations of 1,200–1,800 feet on well-drained volcanic soils, a commitment to single-variety, single-appellation winemaking that has made it a reference point for high-elevation Napa Zinfandel. The flagship Estate Reserve averages $57 at auction and reaches $295 for top lots, with a portfolio centered on the Estate Reserve and the Mayacamas Range bottling. Storybook is notable for producing Zinfandel with restraint: alcohol levels are typically kept below 14.5%, unusual for the variety, with more structure and age-worthiness than most California Zinfandel. The 1976–2006 era under Jerry Seps established the stylistic template; the winery's tunnel-cave system, cut into the mountain in the 1880s, provides ideal natural aging conditions. At auction, older vintages from the mid-1990s through early 2000s draw the most interest from collectors seeking Zinfandel with genuine cellaring history. The estate's 38 acres under vine remains one of the few mountain Zinfandel operations in Napa with genuine auction market presence.
