Tenuta di Trinoro
Tenuta di Trinoro is an extraordinary Tuscan estate established by Andrea Franchetti in 1992 in the remote Val d'Orcia near Sarteano — then considered too cold and marginal for serious red wine production. Franchetti planted Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Petit Verdot in high-altitude conditions at 600-700 meters, producing wines that quickly attracted cult status. The flagship Tenuta di Trinoro (Il Rosso) achieved scores of 96-100 from Parker in multiple vintages during the 2000s, making it one of Italy's most internationally sought-after wines. At auction, 136 lots have traded at an average of $152, ranging from $5 to $657. Il Rosso averages $178 across 52 lots; Palazzi (pure Merlot from the estate's finest parcel) averages $129 across 6 lots; Cupole (the second wine) averages $27 across 10 lots. Andrea Franchetti died in 2021; the estate continues under family management.

In the Glass
Tuscan Super-style blend dominated by Cabernet Franc and Merlot at extreme altitude: dried violets, cassis, graphite, iron mineral, and wild herbs with an austere, almost Bordeaux-like structure rarely found in Tuscany. Palazzi (pure Merlot) shows richer plum and chocolate density. The Val d'Orcia's cool altitude gives these wines a structural elegance that separates them from warmer, plusher coastal Super Tuscans. Both age for 20-30 years in great vintages.
