Toro

Castilla y León · Spain · Wine Auction Prices

Toro is one of Spain's most distinctive red wine appellations, centred on the ancient town of Toro in the province of Zamora, roughly 60 kilometres west of Valladolid along the Duero River. The DO was established in 1987 and is defined by its sandy, well-drained soils at 620–750 metres altitude — conditions that allowed the local Tinta de Toro vine (a pre-phylloxera Tempranillo variant) to survive the late 19th-century phylloxera epidemic largely on its own roots. As a result, many Toro vineyards contain some of Spain's oldest ungrafted vines, contributing to the dense concentration and complexity found in the best bottlings. Tinta de Toro is genetically close to Tempranillo but has adapted over centuries to the extreme continental climate — baking summers above 40°C, harsh winters, and very low rainfall of 300–350 mm per year. The grape produces wines of deep colour, high alcohol (often 14.5–16%), and firm tannin structure that can be quite unapproachable in youth but reward cellaring. Vega Sicilia's Pintia leads auction volume in Toro with 154 lots averaging $84 per bottle — one of the estate's most accessible price points. Numanthia, acquired by LVMH in 2008, is the region's most comprehensive producer at auction with 240 combined lots across three tiers: entry-level Termes (114 lots, $67 average), mid-level Numanthia (66 lots, $138), and the single-parcel Termanthia (60 lots, $178 average). Teso la Monja's Romanico contributes 80 lots at $74.

01

Toro's Tinta de Toro vines survived the late 19th-century phylloxera epidemic largely on their own roots in the region's sandy soils, making Toro one of Spain's most important regions for old, ungrafted vines — some over 100 years old.

02

Numanthia, acquired by LVMH in 2008, is Toro's most-traded producer at auction with 240 total lots across three tiers; the flagship Termanthia — sourced from a single parcel of 80-year-old ungrafted vines — averages $178 per bottle across 60 lots.

03

Vega Sicilia's Pintia project in Toro, launched with the 1995 vintage, accounts for 154 auction lots at an average of $84 per bottle — offering a more accessible entry point than the estate's Ribera del Duero flagships while sharing the same winemaking philosophy.

04

The DO permits wines from 75% minimum Tinta de Toro; regulations require Crianza wines to spend six months in oak (double the usual Spanish requirement) and prohibit irrigation for parcels over 15 years old, preserving the region's low-yield old-vine character.

All 480 tracked Toro auction lots are red. Tinta de Toro wines are among Spain's most powerful and structured: expect very deep ruby-to-garnet colour, aromas of blackberry, dark plum, dried fig, liquorice, and earthy minerals; on the palate, full body, high alcohol, and grippy tannins in youth that soften over time into leather, tobacco, and complex tertiary notes. Termanthia and other top cuvées add dark chocolate, iron, and a violet floral element from the oldest ungrafted vines.
