Montagne de Reims

Champagne · France · Wine Auction Prices

The Montagne de Reims is a forested plateau rising south of Reims, its south and east-facing slopes planted primarily to Pinot Noir that forms the backbone of many of Champagne's most powerful and structured prestige cuvées. The region's Grand Cru villages — Verzenay, Verzy, Louvois, Bouzy, and Ambonnay — produce Pinot Noir of exceptional depth, colour, and body, particularly from the north-facing slopes of Verzenay and Verzy where slower ripening produces the highest acid and the most age-worthy base wines. The great houses of Reims — Krug, Roederer, Ruinart, Gosset — draw heavily on Montagne de Reims Pinot Noir for their prestige cuvées. Krug's Grande Cuvée typically includes a significant proportion of Pinot Noir from Ambonnay; Roederer's Cristal is built primarily on Aÿ and Montagne de Reims Pinot Noir blended with Côte des Blancs Chardonnay. The still red wines of Bouzy — Bouzy Rouge — represent a fascinating sub-category: light, fragrant Pinot Noir that gives a glimpse of what Champagne's base wines taste like before transformation into sparkling wine.

Montagne de Reims
01

Verzenay and Verzy are planted on north-facing slopes — an unusual choice that slows ripening and produces some of the highest-acid, most structured Pinot Noir in Champagne, capable of ageing 30+ years in prestige cuvée form.

02

Krug sources a significant proportion of Pinot Noir from Ambonnay, the southernmost Grand Cru of the Montagne de Reims, for its Grande Cuvée — the village's powerful, full-bodied expression underpins Krug's distinctive density.

03

Gosset, established in 1584, is the oldest Champagne house still in operation; it draws heavily on Montagne de Reims Pinot Noir for its Grand Rosé and Celebris Rosé, among the most consistently praised rosé Champagnes at auction.

04

Bouzy Rouge — still red wine from the Bouzy Grand Cru — is a collector curiosity: light, fragrant Pinot Noir vinified without bubbles that commands significant premiums for its rarity and its window into the base wine quality of one of Champagne's finest villages.

In the Glass

Montagne de Reims Pinot Noir-dominant Champagnes are broader and more structured than Côte des Blancs Blanc de Blancs: red fruit (cherry, strawberry), a brioche richness, and a firm backbone from the Pinot's extract and acidity. Krug Grande Cuvée shows roasted hazelnut, beeswax, and a savoury complexity; Bollinger's RD adds toast, dried fruit, and an almost Burgundian earthiness. These wines reward ageing more than any other Champagne style.
