Louis Roederer

Louis Roederer is one of the last major independent Champagne houses, still family-owned and led by the Rouzaud family, with an exceptional 240-hectare vineyard estate — among the largest owned by any Champagne house — that supplies approximately 70% of its production needs. The house's ownership of its vineyards gives it a traceability and consistency rare in Champagne. Roederer is best known for Cristal, one of the world's most recognised luxury wine brands, originally created in 1876 for Tsar Alexander II of Russia in a flat-bottomed clear crystal decanter (the tsar's preference, and the source of the name). Cristal is produced from exceptional vintage years only, blending Chardonnay and Pinot Noir from the house's finest Grand Cru parcels, aged under a yellow cellophane (protects against light oxidation) and covered with a distinctive clear lead-crystal sleeve. The wine was democratised in the 1990s through hip-hop and pop culture associations — Jay-Z and other artists referenced Cristal as a luxury lifestyle symbol, creating an unprecedented marketing story for a centuries-old wine brand. Beyond Cristal, Roederer's Brut Premier NV (now Brut Collection) is consistently considered one of the finest non-vintage Champagnes for its price. The house has also established Roederer Estate in California's Anderson Valley, producing some of the finest domestic sparkling wine in the US.

Cristal was created in 1876 for Tsar Alexander II, who requested Champagne in a flat-bottomed clear crystal bottle (rather than the standard punt shape); the clear glass and distinctive protective sleeve have become the most recognisable packaging in prestige Champagne.
Louis Roederer owns 240 hectares of vineyards in Champagne — one of the largest independent holdings of any major house — supplying 70% of its production needs and giving the house exceptional traceability and quality control.
The hip-hop and luxury lifestyle associations of the 1990s and 2000s — Jay-Z referenced Cristal in multiple lyrics, creating extraordinary brand awareness among a new generation of consumers — gave Cristal cultural prominence beyond the traditional fine wine world.
Roederer Estate in California's Anderson Valley, established in 1982, produces what many critics consider the finest domestic sparkling wine in the US, demonstrating the house's technical ability to translate its Champagne expertise to a completely different terroir.

In the Glass

Louis Roederer Brut Collection NV is one of Champagne's most consistent and well-priced entry points: apple, brioche, and lemon with a clean, precise mousse. Cristal in great vintages is one of Champagne's finest wines: extraordinary freshness from its high-acid base wines, combined with concentration and a creamy mousse; the best vintages (1996, 2002, 2012) develop honey, almond, and oyster-shell minerality over 10–20 years.
