Anjou

Loire · France · Wine Auction Prices

Anjou encompasses the western middle Loire around Angers, producing an astonishing range from dry Savennières (Chenin Blanc, some of the Loire's most mineral and long-lived whites), through Anjou Rouge (Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon), to the world-famous sweet wines of Coteaux du Layon and Quarts de Chaume. Nicolas Joly at Coulée de Serrant — a 7-hectare single-vineyard monopole and one of France's oldest AOCs — is the Loire's most famous biodynamic producer; his intensely mineral, oxidative Savennières ages 20–30 years. Domaine des Baumard's Quarts de Chaume Grand Cru is the region's most collected sweet wine, with some vintages achieving TBA-like concentration. The Coteaux du Layon, including premier cru villages Beaulieu, Faye, and St-Lambert, produces botrytis Chenin Blanc of remarkable complexity; Château d'Epire and Domaine aux Moines make the finest Savennières after Joly.

Nicolas Joly's Coulée de Serrant — a 7-hectare south-facing amphitheatre of schist and volcanic rock above the Serrant stream — is one of the Loire's oldest AOCs (1959) and produces biodynamic Chenin Blanc of extraordinary density and longevity.

02

Quarts de Chaume, established as one of France's five Grand Cru AOCs in 2011, covers just 37 hectares on the south-facing slopes of the Layon valley; botrytis-affected Chenin Blanc from the best vintages can match Sauternes in concentration and exceed it in acidity.

03

Domaine des Baumard's Quarts de Chaume is produced only in superior vintages and ages with remarkable grace; the 1959, 1964, and 1989 vintages remain vivid demonstrations of Chenin Blanc's capacity for decades-long evolution.

04

The Coteaux du Layon, covering 50 villages in the Layon valley south of Angers, allows six premier cru villages (Beaulieu-sur-Layon, Faye-d'Anjou, Rablay-sur-Layon, Rochefort-sur-Loire, Saint-Aubin-de-Luigné, Saint-Lambert-du-Lattay) to add their name to the appellation.

In the Glass

Savennières from schist soils is profoundly mineral, dry, and almost austere when young: flint, green apple, and a saline finish that can require 5–10 years to open. Quarts de Chaume and Coteaux du Layon sweet wines balance botrytis richness (honey, apricot, peach, quince) against Chenin's driving acidity — a balance that allows these wines to age for decades while maintaining freshness and focus.
