Northern Rhône

Rhône Valley · France · Wine Auction Prices

The Northern Rhône stretches 70 kilometres from Vienne south to Valence, a dramatic landscape of near-vertical granite terraces above the river where Syrah — and only Syrah for reds — produces the world's most complex expressions of the variety. Six appellations form the Northern Rhône's hierarchy: Côte-Rôtie (roasted slope) at the northern extreme; then Condrieu and Château-Grillet for white Viognier; Saint-Joseph on the west bank; Crozes-Hermitage and Hermitage on and around the great granite hill; and Cornas to the south. Hermitage — a single south-facing granite hill above Tain l'Hermitage — is the region's pinnacle: 136 hectares producing less than 500,000 bottles per year of red and white that can age 50+ years. Chapoutier and Jaboulet share the Hermitage hill with a dozen other proprietors; Chave alone blends seven different parcels into a single red and single white Hermitage. Guigal's three single-vineyard Côte-Rôties — La Mouline, La Landonne, La Turque — known as the 'La La La' — represent the most celebrated and most collected Northern Rhône wines at auction, aged 42 months in new oak and released only in exceptional vintages.

01

Hermitage's south-facing granite hill produces red and white wines capable of ageing 50+ years: Chave's Hermitage Rouge from the 1978, 1990, and 2003 vintages are benchmarks for Syrah's longevity at its northern extreme.

02

Guigal's 'La La La' trilogy — La Mouline (planted 1936), La Landonne (1977), La Turque (1985) — are aged 42 months in 100% new oak and only produced in great years; the wines can require 20 years to open and command $400–$700 per bottle at auction.

03

Condrieu and Château-Grillet produce dry whites from Viognier — Château-Grillet is one of France's smallest AOCs at 3.8 hectares, a single-estate monopole that commands extraordinary premiums for its rarity.

04

Cornas, the southernmost Northern Rhône appellation, produces 100% Syrah on ancient terraced granite vineyards; its greatest exponent, Thierry Allemand, farms without chemicals or additions and produces Cornas of extraordinary concentration from Chaillot and Reynard vineyard parcels.

In the Glass

Northern Rhône Syrah at its finest is the most complex expression of the variety anywhere: violets, smoked meat, black olive, iron, and cracked pepper over concentrated dark fruit, with a savoury, almost meaty quality that no other region replicates. Hermitage adds density and 50-year ageing potential; Côte-Rôtie adds floral delicacy from co-fermented Viognier. White Hermitage from Marsanne and Roussanne is waxy, oxidative, and honeyed with extraordinary longevity.
