About Tenuta San Guido

Tenuta San Guido in Bolgheri is the home of Sassicaia, the wine usually cited as the first Super Tuscan. Marchese Mario Incisa della Rocchetta, also co-owner of the racehorse Ribot, first made it in 1948 from Cabernet Sauvignon planted on stony ground, and for two decades kept it for family use. His son Nicolò and nephew Piero Antinori persuaded him to sell it, beginning with the 1968, released in 1971, and the oenologist Giacomo Tachis was hired to refine it. The 1972 topped a 1978 Decanter tasting of clarets. In 1994 it received its own DOC, Bolgheri Sassicaia. Guidalberto followed in 2000, later joined by Le Difese.
