About Vega Sicilia

Vega Sicilia is a Spanish estate in the Ribera del Duero, in the province of Valladolid. Eloy Lecanda y Chaves founded it in 1864 after training in Bordeaux, and he came home with Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Malbec cuttings to plant beside Tempranillo. Bordeaux varieties still cover a sizeable share of the old-vine vineyards. The name comes from the riverside meadows ('vega') and Saint Cecilia; it has nothing to do with Sicily. Jesús Anadón and later Mariano García were the estate's long-serving winemakers. The Álvarez family bought the estate in 1982, the same year Ribera del Duero became a DO. Único is the flagship wine.
