Ribera del Duero
Castilla y León · Spain · Wine Auction Prices
Ribera del Duero is the auction heavyweight of Spain, concentrating more fine wine value per lot than any other Iberian appellation. The DO runs for roughly 115 kilometres along the Duero River in the provinces of Burgos, Valladolid, Soria, and Segovia, at a plateau elevation of 700–900 metres. The altitude creates some of the most extreme diurnal temperature variation in any major wine region — swings of up to 20°C between day and night — which slows ripening and concentrates flavour while preserving the natural acidity essential for long ageing. The grape is Tinta del País, the local clone of Tempranillo, known for its thick skins, deep colour, and tannin structure. Vega Sicilia has anchored the DO's prestige since its first commercial releases: the estate's Único — a blend of Tinto Fino, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Malbec held in wood for a minimum of ten years — is the most-traded wine in Spain at auction, generating 1,302 lots at an average of $811 per bottle, with the highest single bottle recorded at $11,250. Valbuena 5°, Vega Sicilia's younger release, adds 226 lots at $215, and Alión (the modern, single-varietal Tinto Fino project) contributes 181 lots at $118. Dominio de Pingus, founded by Peter Sisseck in 1995 from 4.5 hectares of 65-year-old ungrafted vines, has established itself as the region's other cult reference: Pingus averages $1,110 across 107 lots, while Flor de Pingus delivers 373 lots at $492. Aalto, co-founded by Mariano García (former Vega Sicilia winemaker), rounds out the collector tier with PS averaging $257 across 54 lots.
In the Glass
Ribera del Duero is exclusively red wine at auction — all 2,636 tracked lots. Tinto Fino delivers dark cherry, plum, graphite, tobacco, and firm but fine-grained tannins at the estate level; the top cuvées (Único, Pingus) develop extraordinary secondary complexity of cigar box, dried fruit, iron, and truffle over decades. Wines from Vega Sicilia's Cabernet-Merlot-blended Único add cassis and cedar to the Tempranillo core. Flor de Pingus and Aalto offer a more modern, fruit-forward style with dark berry, new oak spice, and plush tannins.
