About Ribera del Duero
Ribera del Duero is a Denominación de Origen on Spain's northern plateau, one of eleven quality-wine regions in Castile and León. It runs about 115 km along the Duero, mainly in southern Burgos with parts of Valladolid, Segovia and Soria. Aranda de Duero is its centre, and the best-known vineyards lie west around Peñafiel and Roa. Benedictine monks from Cluny probably shaped local viticulture in the 12th century. Producers founded the DO in July 1982. Tinto Fino, the local Tempranillo, dominates. Vega Sicilia set the benchmark with Bordeaux-blended reds, and Alejandro Fernández's all-Tempranillo Tinto Pesquera was once controversial.
