Alban Vineyards

Alban Vineyards was the first American winery to specialise entirely in Rhône varieties, established by John Alban in Edna Valley, San Luis Obispo County in 1989 after Alban trained in France's Northern Rhône. His approximately 65-acre estate vineyard — at 1,200 feet elevation on volcanic and calcareous soils — is divided into named blocks producing single-vineyard Syrah (Reva, Lorraine, Patrina, Seymour's), Grenache, and Viognier. Across 1,484 auction lots averaging $148 per bottle, Alban occupies the premium tier of California Rhône. The Reva Estate Syrah is the most recognisable label; Lorraine, produced from older-vine fruit, consistently earns higher critical scores and commands premiums above $200 per bottle. Pandora, a Roussanne-dominant white, is among California's rarest and most compelling whites. The estate's biodynamic-leaning farming and low yields — typically under 2 tons per acre — produce wines of unusual density and ageing potential. Parker awarded Alban's 2001 Reva 99 points, cementing the winery's critical standing. Top auction vintages are 2001, 2006, 2012, and 2015. Alban's influence on California's Rhône movement is foundational — he provided bud wood and inspiration to Sine Qua Non, Qupé, and dozens of other producers — though the estate's own auction market remains relatively underdeveloped compared with its historical importance.

Alban Vineyards was the first American winery dedicated exclusively to Rhône varieties, planted in 1989 after John Alban trained in the Northern Rhône; his estate provided cuttings that launched California's Rhône Ranger movement.
Parker scored the 2001 Reva Estate Syrah 99 points; the wine remains one of the highest-rated California Syrahs ever produced and trades above $250 per bottle for magnum and 3-litre formats.
The Lorraine Syrah, from the estate's oldest-vine block planted in 1989, produces fewer than 200 cases annually and averages above $200 per bottle at auction, commanding a consistent premium over Reva.
Pandora, Alban's Roussanne-dominant white blended with Viognier and Grenache Blanc, is among California's rarest whites — fewer than 150 cases produced annually — with auction prices above $150.

In the Glass

Alban Estate Syrahs are Northern Rhône in spirit but Californian in weight: concentrated dark berry, violet, black olive, smoked meat, and spice — more pepper and savoury than fruit-forward. The palate is full and rich with firm tannins and a mineral backbone from volcanic soils. Lorraine adds a leathery, almost Côte-Rôtie complexity. The Viognier shows intense white peach, apricot, and honeysuckle with a weighty, textured palate typical of warm Edna Valley.
