Ca'Marcanda (Gaja)

Ca'Marcanda is Angelo Gaja's Bolgheri project, established after years of negotiation with local landowners—the estate's name translates roughly as 'house of endless bargaining.' The 100-hectare property was assembled from 1996 onward and the first vintage was 2000. Three wines are produced: Camarcanda (a Merlot-Cabernet Sauvignon-Cabernet Franc blend, the flagship), Magari (a mid-tier blend of the same varieties plus Petit Verdot), and Promis (a Syrah-Merlot-Sangiovese blend at the entry level). Ca'Marcanda represents Gaja's interpretation of Bordeaux varieties in the coastal Bolgheri climate, competing with Sassicaia and Ornellaia. Auction activity shows Magari as the highest-volume wine (97 lots, $58 average), while Camarcanda commands the highest price ($102, 68 lots, 2010 vintage peak). Prices reach $461 at auction. The 2012 vintage is the overall most-traded in the database. Production is moderate relative to Gaja's Piedmont estates—Camarcanda is approximately 50,000 bottles annually. The estate's connection to the Gaja name generates collector interest from Piedmont enthusiasts who want Bolgheri exposure under a familiar brand.

Ca'Marcanda was established from 1996 after Angelo Gaja spent years acquiring parcels in Bolgheri; the first vintage was 2000, and all three wines (Camarcanda, Magari, Promis) remain in production.
Camarcanda, the flagship Merlot-Cabernet blend, averages $102 per bottle across 68 lots, with the 2010 vintage the most active in secondary markets.
Magari is the highest-volume wine at auction with 97 lots and a $58 average—making it an accessible entry point into the Gaja Bolgheri portfolio at roughly 57% of the flagship's price.
The Bolgheri property covers 100 hectares; Camarcanda annual production is approximately 50,000 bottles—larger scale than most Gaja Piedmont labels, moderating scarcity premiums.

In the Glass

Bolgheri Bordeaux blend with coastal Mediterranean character: black plum, graphite, dark chocolate, and bay leaf on a supple, medium-weight frame. Camarcanda is the most structured and complete; Magari echoes the blend at a lighter concentration. Promis adds Syrah-driven violet and black pepper, with Sangiovese contributing fresh acidity and dried-herb notes.
