Domaine Arlaud

Domaine Arlaud in Morey-Saint-Denis is one of the Cote de Nuits' most exciting contemporary estates, farming an exceptional portfolio of grand and premier crus. Cyprien Arlaud took over from his father Herve in the mid-2000s and transformed the domaine: lighter extraction, whole-cluster fermentation (now at 50–100% depending on the cuvee), minimal sulfur, and an emphasis on transparency and precision over power. The grand cru holdings—Charmes-Chambertin, Clos Saint-Denis, Clos de la Roche, and Bonnes Mares—represent four of the Cote de Nuits' most prestigious sites. With 944 lots averaging $307 per bottle and prices reaching $4,624, Arlaud sits at the serious collector tier. The 2005 vintage is the top auction year. Premier cru bottlings from Morey-Saint-Denis—Les Ruchots, Les Millandes, and the Cuvee Unique Reserve—provide entry into the portfolio at lower price points. Cyprien's shift to whole clusters and reductive winemaking has driven consistent critical acclaim, with 2015, 2017, and 2018 being particularly celebrated recent vintages.

Cyprien Arlaud shifted the domaine to 50–100% whole-cluster fermentation depending on the wine and vintage—a dramatic departure producing wines with greater aromatic complexity, spice, and structural tension than the destemmed approach used previously.
The domaine holds grand cru parcels in four different appellations—Charmes-Chambertin, Clos Saint-Denis, Clos de la Roche, and Bonnes Mares—an unusually broad grand cru portfolio for a Morey-Saint-Denis family domaine.
Clos de la Roche, arguably Morey-Saint-Denis's finest grand cru, averages above $400 per bottle at auction in Arlaud's portfolio, with top vintages such as 2005 and 2015 trading significantly higher from its large-bouldered limestone and clay soils.
Total domaine production is approximately 4,000–5,000 cases annually, with individual grand cru bottlings often under 500 cases; limited supply combined with Cyprien's acclaimed winemaking has driven rapid price appreciation since the early 2010s.

In the Glass

Whole-cluster Cote de Nuits Pinot Noir: aromatic, precise, and structured. Clos Saint-Denis shows the most perfume—cranberry, wild strawberry, spice, and dried rose—while Clos de la Roche is denser with dark cherry, iron, and mineral earth. Charmes-Chambertin adds a plush, velvety texture. Bonnes Mares from the terra rossa sector is the most structured: dark fruit, graphite, and firm tannins. The whole-cluster signatures—spice, forest floor, fine-grained tannins—appear across all cuvees.
