Domaine Raveneau

Domaine Raveneau is the undisputed reference point for Chablis, established in 1948 when François Raveneau combined purchased parcels with vineyards from his wife's Dauvissat family. Seeing opportunity where others saw decline — Chablis was economically depressed in the 1950s and 1960s — François bought additional parcels at low prices, assembling 9.29 hectares including Grand Cru holdings in Les Clos (0.54 ha), Valmur (0.75 ha), and Blanchots (0.60 ha). Jean-Marie Raveneau took over as winemaker in 1984, joined by his brother Bernard in 1995. The style is deliberately traditional: fermentation in old oak and stainless steel, no temperature control, extended lees aging. Annual production is around 50,000 bottles across six appellations, making Raveneau among the most tightly allocated wines in France. At auction, Raveneau Grand Crus regularly sell for $400–$900 per bottle, extraordinary prices for Chablis, while the Premier Cru Montée de Tonnerre can surpass many Côte de Beaune village wines.

François Raveneau founded the domaine in 1948 at a moment when Chablis land was nearly worthless; his contrarian land purchases in the 1960s and 1970s assembled 9.29 hectares including three Grand Cru parcels that would later make the domaine's reputation.
Annual production of approximately 50,000 bottles is spread across six appellations — Grand Crus, four Premier Crus, and village Chablis — making Raveneau the most tightly allocated Chablis estate, with waiting lists measured in years.
The estate ages its wines in a combination of old oak demi-muids and stainless steel, using no new oak; this preserves Chablis's signature flinty minerality while adding a textural depth missing from purely tank-fermented examples.
Raveneau's Montée de Tonnerre Premier Cru, from east-facing Kimmeridgian limestone, consistently scores 93–97 points and auctions for $200–$450 per bottle — pricing that rivals many Côte de Beaune Premier Crus.

In the Glass

Raveneau Chablis are defined by an austere, almost electric minerality — crushed oyster shell, flint, green apple, and lemon zest in youth, developing savoury, almost Burgundian complexity with a decade of age. The Grand Crus Les Clos and Valmur achieve enormous depth and length while retaining the racy acidity that sets Chablis apart from all other Chardonnay. Montée de Tonnerre Premier Cru shows a silkier texture with white peach and hazelnut emerging over time.
