Gaja
Gaja is Italy's most influential fine wine producer — the estate in Barbaresco that Angelo Gaja transformed from a respected regional winery into a global collectible brand through a series of revolutionary decisions that redefined what Italian wine could be. Founded by Giovanni Gaja in 1859, the estate became Angelo's project when he joined in 1961 at the age of 21. His first major move — bottling the 1967 Sorì San Lorenzo and Sorì Tildìn as single-vineyard wines at premium prices — established the concept of terroir-specific Italian wine at a moment when most Barolo and Barbaresco was sold in bulk or under generic labels. Angelo Gaja's subsequent innovations — introducing new oak barrels (barriques) to Piedmont in 1979, planting international varieties, introducing estate-bottled Langhe DOC wines (Costa Russi, Sorì San Lorenzo, Sorì Tildìn were controversially declassified from Barbaresco to Langhe DOC in 1996 to allow the addition of Barbera — a decision reversed in 2013), and building one of Italy's most sophisticated marketing operations — created a template followed by virtually every subsequent Italian luxury wine producer. The Sorì San Lorenzo and Sorì Tildìn are Gaja's most sought auction wines, each from a single vineyard in Barbaresco with 30–50-year-old Nebbiolo vines. The single-vineyard Barolo acquisitions — Sperss (from Serralunga d'Alba) and Conteisa (from La Morra) — extended Gaja's influence into the other great Piedmontese DOCG. The Barbaresco (village level, no single vineyard) is a benchmark for the appellation as a whole.

In the Glass
Gaja's Barbaresco single vineyards are among the most complex and age-worthy Italian wines: Sorì San Lorenzo is the most perfumed and floral — dried rose, tar, cherry, and violet, with a fine-grained tannin structure and mineral precision; Sorì Tildìn adds greater body and density; Costa Russi is the most immediately approachable. All three develop extraordinary complexity of dried fruit, tobacco, leather, and iron with 15–25 years. The Barbaresco village wine is the best introduction to the house style.
