About Gaja
Gaja was founded in Barbaresco in 1859 by Giovanni Gaja, whose family had come from Spain in the 17th century and ran a tavern serving its own wine. In 1937 his grandson, also Giovanni, printed the family name in large red letters on the label and later bought important vineyards, guided by his mother Clotilda Rey's insistence on quality and high prices. Angelo Gaja joined in 1961 after studying in Alba and Montpellier, and introduced green harvesting, single-vineyard bottlings (Sorì San Lorenzo from 1967, Sorì Tildìn from 1970, Costa Russi from 1978), controlled malolactic fermentation and barriques. He also planted Cabernet Sauvignon at Darmagi in 1978.
