About Barolo
Barolo is a red DOCG from Piedmont made from Nebbiolo. Its zone, in the province of Cuneo south-west of Alba, includes Barolo, Castiglione Falletto and Serralunga d'Alba in full and parts of eight other communes, among them La Morra and Monforte d'Alba. A 2010 rule change keeps vineyards off valley floors and north-facing slopes. The wine is known for tar-and-rose aromas, long ageing and a rusty tint with age. It must be aged 36 months, 18 of them in wood, or five years for Riserva. It became a DOCG in 1980. The 'Barolo wars' of the 1970s–80s set traditionalists against modernisers chasing fruitier styles.
