About Gattinara
Gattinara is a red DOCG from the hills of the comune of Gattinara in northern Piedmont's province of Vercelli, north-west of Novara. It became a DOC in 1967 and a DOCG in 1990. The wine must be at least 90% Nebbiolo, known locally as Spanna, with small amounts of Bonarda di Gattinara and Vespolina allowed. It spends two years in wood, three for riserva, plus further time in bottle. The Oxford Companion to Wine, as cited in the source, says these northern hills can produce rivals to Barolo and Barbaresco. At times Gattinara was valued above Barolo for its longevity.
