About Barbaresco
Barbaresco is a Nebbiolo red from the Langhe just east of Alba. It is made in the communes of Barbaresco, Treiso and Neive, plus part of Alba. It became a DOC in 1966 and a DOCG in 1980. Its accepted birth date is 1894, when Domizio Cavazza, head of Alba's enological school, and nine growers founded the Cantina Sociale. Before that, local Nebbiolo was mostly sold to Barolo producers. A revival from the late 1950s was led by Bruno Giacosa and Angelo Gaja, who took the wine abroad. Soils are mainly Tortonian calcareous marl, and the vineyard grew from 484 to 733 hectares between the early 1990s and 2019.
