Giuseppe Mascarello e Figlio

Giuseppe Mascarello e Figlio, based in Monchiero with vineyards in Castiglione Falletto, is one of Barolo's most revered traditionalist producers. The estate's jewel is Monprivato—a monopole in Castiglione Falletto planted largely to the Michet clone of Nebbiolo—producing one of the Langhe's most consistently outstanding single-vineyard Barolos. Mauro Mascarello defended long macerations and large Slavonian oak for decades, producing wines requiring a decade or more to integrate. The Ca'd'Morissio Riserva, from the oldest Michet vines within Monprivato, is the estate's rarest bottling, averaging above $700 per bottle at auction. Villero from Castiglione Falletto adds a second major single-vineyard to the lineup. With 1,163 lots averaging $282 per bottle and prices reaching $2,629, Mascarello sits firmly in Barolo's collector tier. Top auction vintages include 2006, 2001, 1996, and 1990—years when Monprivato's austere structure softened into extraordinary complexity. The estate also produces Barbera d'Asti, Dolcetto, and Freisa, rounding out a classically Piedmontese portfolio. Son Giuseppe Mascarello continues the uncompromising approach, maintaining the domaine's standing as a touchstone for traditionalist Barolo.

Monprivato is a monopole—the estate owns all 6.7 hectares—one of very few exclusively-owned cru sites in Barolo, dominated by the Michet subclone of Nebbiolo, which produces smaller, more concentrated berries than the standard Lampia clone.
Ca'd'Morissio Riserva is made only in exceptional vintages from the oldest Michet vines within Monprivato; production is typically under 3,000 bottles and the wine averages above $600 per bottle at auction.
The 2006 Monprivato received near-perfect scores from major critics and has become a benchmark for the vintage, fetching prices well above the $282 portfolio average in recent secondary market transactions.
Mauro Mascarello conducted macerations of 30–60 days on Monprivato, far exceeding modern practice—a technique credited with the wines' extreme ageability and the estate's reputation as a touchstone for long-maceration traditionalism.

In the Glass

Austere, structured Nebbiolo: dried roses, tar, iron, and anise on Monprivato; darker and more muscular on Villero with added earth and mineral grip. With age, Monprivato evolves into extraordinary complexity—truffle, leather, tobacco, and dried cherry—taking 15–20 years to fully integrate in top vintages. Ca'd'Morissio Riserva adds greater density, concentration, and a raw power that demands the longest cellaring. The style demands patience throughout the portfolio.
