Giuseppe Rinaldi

Giuseppe Rinaldi is one of Barolo's most revered and fiercely traditional producers, based in Barolo village itself, with the estate now run by daughters Marta and Carlotta following Giuseppe's death in 2018. The domaine produces Barolo from four historically significant crus: Brunate (in La Morra), Cannubi San Lorenzo, Ravera (in Novello), and Tre Tine — all blended according to traditional Langhe practice. Extended maceration of 30–40 days and ageing in large Slavonian botti are non-negotiable practices at Rinaldi. Across 440 lots, the estate averages $403 per bottle, with prices reaching $3,346. Vintages 2010, 2013, and 2016 have been exceptional, each earning 96–99 points from Burghound and Vinous. The wines are unapologetically structured in youth and demand 15–25 years of cellaring. The Barbera d'Alba is also unusually serious — fermented and aged like the Barolo. Rinaldi's integrity and reputation for producing wines of generational quality sustain strong auction demand despite extremely limited production of approximately 20,000 bottles annually.

Giuseppe Rinaldi was one of Barolo's most vocal advocates for traditional winemaking — long macerations, large botti ageing, no barriques — and a fierce critic of the Barolo modernists of the 1990s and 2000s.
The estate's four Barolo vineyard sources include Brunate in La Morra, Cannubi San Lorenzo, Ravera in Novello, and Tre Tine, covering some of the DOCG's most historically significant terroirs.
The 2010 Barolo Brunate earned 99 points from Burghound and 97 from Vinous, trading at $600–900 per bottle at auction — a premium reflecting both the vintage's quality and the tiny production.
440 auction lots average $403 per bottle — among the highest for any Piedmontese producer — with a ceiling of $3,346 driven by magnums and library vintages of Brunate and Tre Tine.

In the Glass

Rinaldi Barolo is the definition of traditional Nebbiolo: dried rose, tar, anise, iron, leather, and sour red cherry with dense, grippy tannins and soaring acidity. Brunate expresses La Morra's floral, red-fruited delicacy; Cannubi San Lorenzo and Ravera add darker fruit and more mineral intensity. New oak is entirely absent — large botti give the wines an unmediated terroir expression. The wines need 15–20 years minimum; at peak they are among Italy's greatest.
