Serralunga d'Alba

Barolo · Piedmont · Italy · Wine Auction Prices

Serralunga d'Alba is the most powerful and age-worthy of Barolo's communes, producing wines of extraordinary tannin, structure, and longevity from its Helvetian soils — compact, iron-rich limestone and sandstone deposited in the Miocene epoch. The commune stretches along a narrow ridge between two valleys, its vineyards catching maximum sun exposure while the dense soils force the vine roots deep for complex mineral extraction. Vigna Rionda, Falletto, Francia, Gabutti, and Cerreta are among the most prized MGAs in the entire Barolo DOCG. Giacomo Conterno's Monfortino Riserva — a multi-vintage selection aged up to seven years in large Slavonian oak — and Bruno Giacosa's red-label Falletto Riserva represent the twin pinnacles of Serralunga's expressivity. Wines from this commune rarely show their full complexity before 15 years of age and can evolve beautifully for 40 years or more.

Serralunga d'Alba
01

Serralunga's Helvetian soils — hard, compact limestone and sandstone formed 15–20 million years ago — produce wines of greater tannin, acidity, and longevity than any other Barolo commune, requiring 15–20 years of cellaring before approaching maturity.

02

Vigna Rionda at Serralunga's southern tip is considered by many collectors and critics to be the single finest MGA in the entire Barolo appellation, producing wines of extraordinary depth and mineral complexity across a range of growers.

03

Giacomo Conterno's Monfortino Riserva, sourced from Cerretta and aged up to seven years in large Slavonian oak, is consistently the highest-priced Barolo at auction — a benchmark for the traditional Piedmontese approach to Nebbiolo.

04

Bruno Giacosa's Falletto estate, purchased in 1982, produces the appellation's most celebrated red-label Riserva in exceptional years; the 1989 and 1990 Falletto Riservas are among the greatest Italian wines of the 20th century.

In the Glass

Serralunga Barolo is the most austere and demanding expression of Nebbiolo: young wines show tar, rose petal, dried cherry, and a formidable grip of iron-hard tannins that demand patience. With 15–25 years, those tannins gradually meld into leather, dried violets, tobacco, liquorice, and a distinctive ferrous minerality unique to Helvetian soils. The finish is exceptionally long and savoury, with a drying persistence that distinguishes Serralunga from the softer, more fragrant wines of La Morra.
