Falletto Barolo MGA

Serralunga d'Alba · Barolo · Piedmont · Italy · Wine Auction Prices

The Falletto vineyard in Serralunga d'Alba is virtually synonymous with Bruno Giacosa, who purchased the estate in 1982 after sourcing fruit from the site for decades and recognised it as among the finest in the appellation. The 7.35-hectare property sits on Helvetian limestone and sandstone on the western slope of Serralunga's ridge, facing primarily southwest and receiving extended afternoon sun. Giacosa's Falletto became the platform for some of the greatest Italian wines of the 20th century: the Riserva, produced only in exceptional years and identified by a red rather than white label, is among the most sought lots at Italian wine auctions globally. The estate is now managed by Azienda Agricola Falletto di Bruno Giacosa, continuing the tradition with Bruna Giacosa at the helm following her father's death in 2022. The regular Falletto Barolo — equally balanced and age-worthy, if less extreme than the Riserva — represents one of the finest value propositions in Italian fine wine.

Falletto Barolo MGA
01

Bruno Giacosa's red-label Falletto Riserva — issued only in years Giacosa deemed exceptional, including 1982, 1989, 1990, 1996, 2000, 2001, and 2016 — is among the most consistently celebrated Italian wines at auction, with top vintages fetching $800–1,500+ per bottle.

02

The Falletto estate (7.35 ha) was purchased by Giacosa in 1982 after years of sourcing fruit from the vineyard as a négociant — confirming his conviction that Falletto represented a terroir of Grand Cru-equivalent quality requiring estate ownership to fully express.

03

Giacosa's approach was resolutely traditional: long maceration, large Slavonian oak casks, and extended ageing before release — producing wines of extraordinary longevity that typically require 15–20 years to open and can age gracefully for 40 years or more.

04

The white-label Falletto Barolo (as opposed to the red-label Riserva) offers access to the same exceptional terroir at approximately half the price, representing one of the most compelling entry points to serious aged Barolo for collectors at auction.

In the Glass

Falletto Barolo is the archetype of traditional Serralunga Nebbiolo: tar, dried rose, iron, and compressed dark cherry in youth, framed by dense, precise tannins that are neither harsh nor giving but simply demand patience. The Riserva adds an extra dimension of concentration and structural complexity — a wine that seems almost monolithic for its first decade but gradually reveals extraordinary layers of tobacco, leather, dried violet, and mineral depth over 20–30 years.
