Vigna Rionda Barolo MGA

Serralunga d'Alba · Barolo · Piedmont · Italy · Wine Auction Prices

Vigna Rionda (the 'rounded vineyard') sits at the southern tip of Serralunga d'Alba's ridge, roughly 8 hectares of south-facing Helvetian limestone and sandstone at 330–380 metres elevation that many collectors and critics consider the single finest MGA in the entire Barolo appellation. The vineyard's position on the steep, sun-drenched southern slope of Serralunga gives it maximum solar exposure while the compact Helvetian soils force extreme vine stress, concentrating flavour and building extraordinary tannic architecture. The site was historically farmed by multiple families including the Dogliani, Sobrero, and Ratti families before the modern era, and now includes holdings by Massolino, Ettore Germano, Oddero, Burlotto, Guido Porro, and Giacomo Borgogno. Massolino's Riserva, aged 36 months in large Slavonian oak, is considered the benchmark expression: austere in youth, almost impenetrable for the first decade, but evolving into one of the most complex and enduring Italian wines in existence.

Vigna Rionda Barolo MGA
01

Vigna Rionda is widely considered the finest single MGA in the Barolo appellation — a distinction earned by its consistently exceptional results across multiple growers and vintages, and its extraordinary longevity that can exceed 40 years from great vintages.

02

The vineyard's Helvetian soils — compact limestone and iron-rich sandstone from the Miocene epoch — produce the most demanding and age-worthy expression of Serralunga Nebbiolo: impenetrable in youth but transforming over decades into wines of profound complexity.

03

Multiple producers bottle Vigna Rionda separately, allowing direct comparisons of how different winemaking philosophies — traditional long maceration at Massolino versus modern shorter maceration at Oddero — express the same exceptional terroir.

04

In exceptional years like 1989, 1990, 1996, 2001, 2010, and 2016, Vigna Rionda Riservas from Massolino and Ettore Germano command prices at auction comparable to top Burgundy Premier Crus, reflecting the MGA's acknowledged first-growth status in the appellation.

In the Glass

Vigna Rionda Barolo is the most profound and austere expression of Serralunga Nebbiolo: tar, iron, dried rose, and compressed dark cherry in youth, framed by tannins of extraordinary density and precision. With 15–25 years, those tannins integrate into leather, tobacco, dried violet, liquorice, and a persistent ferrous minerality that is the MGA's defining characteristic. The finish can last several minutes — a quality unique to the finest Vigna Rionda wines in great vintages.
