Francia (Cascina Francia) Barolo MGA
Serralunga d'Alba · Barolo · Piedmont · Italy · Wine Auction Prices
Cascina Francia is the estate vineyard of Giacomo Conterno, acquired in 1978 from a local farming family and since transformed into one of the most celebrated addresses in Italian wine. Situated on Serralunga's central ridge at approximately 340 metres elevation on Helvetian limestone and compact sandstone soils, Francia is the source of Conterno's estate Barolo as well as the vineyard from which the Monfortino Riserva selection is drawn in exceptional years. Giacomo Conterno the elder planted the vineyard following purchase and the estate has been farmed by his son Roberto Conterno since the 1990s, who maintains the deeply traditional approach of extended maceration, no new oak, and ageing exclusively in large Slavonian casks. Francia Barolo — the non-Monfortino expression — is one of the finest-value wines in the Barolo appellation, offering genuine Serralunga complexity and structure at a price well below Monfortino.
In the Glass
Francia Barolo is the most complete expression of Serralunga at a non-Monfortino price point: tar, dried cherry, iron, and rose petal on the nose with a concentrated, firmly tannic palate that demands patience. The tannins are firm but not coarse — more structured than La Morra, more accessible than the steeliest Vigna Rionda — evolving over 15–20 years into a complex interplay of leather, tobacco, dried violet, and mineral depth that is the hallmark of Conterno's traditional approach.
