Castiglione Falletto
Barolo · Piedmont · Italy · Wine Auction Prices
Castiglione Falletto occupies a pivotal position at the geographical centre of the Barolo DOCG, straddling the appellation's geological divide between the Tortonian soils of the west and the Helvetian soils of the east. This dual geological identity gives its wines a unique character: the power and tannic density of Serralunga combined with the aromatic accessibility of La Morra. Bricco Boschis is the most celebrated MGA — a Cavallotto monopole producing wines of extraordinary concentration and longevity. Monprivato, the monopole of Giuseppe Mascarello, is considered one of the greatest single-vineyard Barolos and among the most reliable at auction. Vietti, with holdings in Villero, Rocche, and Brunate, is the commune's most widely distributed producer. The small size of Castiglione Falletto — just 680 hectares total — means its wines are scarcer and command a premium relative to the larger communes.
In the Glass
Castiglione Falletto Barolo is the appellation's most balanced style: neither the austerity of Serralunga nor the floral softness of La Morra, but a combination of both — red cherry and dried violet aromatics over a tannic structure that is firm but not harsh, with a persistent mineral finish that reflects the commune's dual geological identity. The finest examples from Monprivato and Bricco Boschis develop extraordinary complexity of leather, tobacco, dried rose, and iron with 15–25 years of age.
