Muga

Muga is one of the most highly regarded family bodegas in Rioja, founded in 1932 and today run by the third and fourth generations of the Muga family. The bodega is celebrated for maintaining traditional Rioja winemaking practices — aging in American and French oak made by the estate's own cooperage — with a modern understanding of viniculture. The flagship Prado Enea Gran Reserva comes from low-yielding, old-vine Tempranillo and is aged for a minimum of three years in large American oak followed by extensive bottle aging, creating a wine of remarkable elegance and longevity. The Torre Muga Reserva and single-vineyard Aro (from a single old-vine plot) complete the prestige range. Muga also produces excellent white and rosé Rioja. The estate owns its own cooperage — one of very few in Spain — allowing complete control over wood management and toasting. At auction, Prado Enea Gran Reserva is among the most consistently collected traditional-style Riojas, with the best vintages offering exceptional complexity and longevity at prices well below the most fashionable Super-Spanish estates.

In the Glass

Muga wines show polished traditional Rioja character: Prado Enea delivers dried cherry, cedar, tobacco, leather, and vanilla with fine, integrated tannins and an elegance that comes from careful oak management. Aro adds greater concentration and intensity while maintaining Muga's characteristic refinement.
