Ribbon Ridge

Oregon · United States · Wine Auction Prices

Ribbon Ridge is the Willamette's smallest and most geologically distinctive AVA: a compressed island of Willakenzie marine sedimentary soil entirely surrounded by the Yamhill-Carlton district, creating a unique microclimate with slightly higher elevation, better air drainage, and 100% biodynamic or organic farming across all significant estates. The AVA's defining wine is Beaux Frères The Beaux Frères Vineyard Pinot Noir, produced by Michael Etzel (Robert Parker's brother-in-law) from 30+ year-old estate vines on the ridge; the 1994–2008 vintages under Parker's direct attention achieved extraordinary auction prices. Beaux Frères has since transitioned to full biodynamic farming. Adelsheim, Evening Land, and Brick House (the Willamette's first certified organic vineyard, 1990) also farm in Ribbon Ridge. The compact 350-hectare AVA was established as a separate appellation in 2011 specifically to recognise the Willakenzie soil's distinctive influence. The Upper Terrace Pinot Noir (Beaux Frères' second wine from estate vines) and the flagship offer the most direct comparison to the Willakenzie's marine mineral character.

01

Beaux Frères The Beaux Frères Vineyard Pinot Noir, from 30+ year-old estate Willakenzie-soil vines, is Oregon's most auction-traded wine by lot count; the estate's transition to full biodynamic farming in the 2000s and Michael Etzel's continued ownership has maintained quality through multiple ownership discussions.

02

Ribbon Ridge's compressed, island-like Willakenzie formation — entirely surrounded by Yamhill-Carlton — produces a specific mineral quality in Pinot Noir that combines the coastal marine influence with the ridge's slightly higher elevation and consistent air drainage, reducing disease pressure and allowing full physiological ripeness.

03

Brick House Vineyards, the Willamette's first certified organic estate (established 1990 by Doug Tunnell), farms 12 hectares of Pinot Noir on Ribbon Ridge's Willakenzie soils entirely without irrigation or synthetic inputs; their Cuvée du Tonnelier is considered one of Oregon's most terroir-expressive Pinot Noirs.

04

Ribbon Ridge became a standalone AVA in 2011 — separated from Yamhill-Carlton despite being geographically enclosed within it — after extensive geological study confirmed the ridge's distinct Willakenzie subsoil and unique thermal and precipitation characteristics.

In the Glass

Ribbon Ridge Pinot Noir is the most concentrated and mineral in the Willamette Valley: Willakenzie marine sedimentary soils produce an almost saline mineral quality alongside dark cherry, plum, and blackberry. Beaux Frères The Beaux Frères Vineyard shows the signature — deep, concentrated, savoury, with firm but fine tannin that rewards 10–20 years of cellaring. The ridge's consistent air drainage and altitude add freshness and persistence to the mineral core.
