Saint-Joseph

Rhône Valley · France · Wine Auction Prices

Saint-Joseph is the northern Rhône's most extensive appellation, stretching 60km along the right bank of the river from Condrieu to Cornas. With 460+ lots at auction, the market reflects both the appellation's scale and its variable terroir — only the central granite hillsides around Tournon and Mauves produce wines worthy of serious collector interest. Chave's Saint-Joseph Offerus, Coursodon, Chapoutier (Le Granit), and Jean-Louis Chave's single-plot bottlings anchor the top tier. White Saint-Joseph from Marsanne and Roussanne — particularly Chave's and Coursodon's — represents extraordinary value at $80–200 per bottle. The appellation's diverse soils range from granite (north, around Tournon) to limestone (south) and alluvial plains — only the granite sections produce wines with genuine complexity and longevity.

Saint-Joseph
01

Jean-Louis Chave's Saint-Joseph Offerus, sourced from multiple parcels across the appellation, is named after a 15th-century wall painting in Mauves church; it represents the benchmark for northern Rhône Syrah under $100 at auction.

02

The Saint-Joseph AOC was dramatically expanded in 1969, adding 1,800 hectares of alluvial valley floor to the original 97 hectares of steep granite hillside terroir — a controversial move that diluted the appellation's quality reputation for decades.

03

White Saint-Joseph from Marsanne and Roussanne, particularly from old-vine plantings in Tournon, achieves a richness and longevity (15–25 years) unusual for a right-bank Rhône white wine at its price point.

04

Pierre Gonon's Saint-Joseph, from old-vine Syrah and Marsanne planted by his grandfather on steep granite terraces above Mauves, is one of France's most sought-after 'under-the-radar' wines, trading at $150–300 per bottle despite modest production.

In the Glass

Saint-Joseph Syrah from the granite hillsides shows blackberry, violet, and black pepper with a lighter, more delicate structure than Hermitage or Cornas — approachable at 5–8 years but capable of 15+ years from top sites. White Saint-Joseph is full-bodied with peach, apricot, white flowers, and a waxy texture, gaining complexity with 10+ years of age. Valley-floor examples are simpler and earlier-drinking, best consumed within 5 years.
