Domaine Durand

Domaine Durand is a small Cornas and Saint-Péray estate run by brothers Éric and Joël Durand in the northern Rhône valley of Ardèche. Established in the early 1990s, the domaine farms a patchwork of granite terraces across multiple Cornas lieux-dits as well as Marsanne-planted vineyards for white wines. At auction, the top cuvée is Empreintes — a selection of old-vine Cornas Syrah that averages $190 per bottle with a peak vintage of 2014, representing the domaine's most concentrated and structured expression. Confidence is the second prestige cuvée at $183, drawn from a distinct Cornas parcel. The Lautaret and Coteaux wines sit at the entry level around $26–$27. Total auction lots of 109 with an average price of $104 reflects a loyalist collector base willing to pay serious prices for top cuvées while the entry wines trade near or below retail. The Durands are considered among Cornas's most reliable producers, consistently making wines that age well over 10–15 years without the rusticity that historically plagued the appellation. Their wines are notably more polished than those from some older-generation Cornas producers, reflecting both more careful extraction and earlier picking for acidity retention. The 2014 Empreintes in particular has attracted critical praise as one of the finer expressions of Cornas from that underrated vintage.

Empreintes is the top Cornas cuvée, sourced from select old-vine parcels on Cornas's granite terraces, averaging $190 per bottle at auction with the 2014 vintage as the reference point.
Domaine Durand farms granite-terraced vineyards in both Cornas (for Syrah) and adjacent Saint-Péray (for Marsanne white wines), a less common dual-appellation holding in this part of the Northern Rhône.
The Confidence cuvée, averaging $183 at auction, is the estate's second prestige red, often rated comparably to Empreintes in blind tastings by Rhône specialists.
The domaine was established in the early 1990s and has been considered a top-tier Cornas producer since the 2000s, helping shift the appellation's reputation from rustic to refined.

In the Glass

Durand's Cornas Syrahs are structured and granite-driven: dark blackberry, smoked meat, black olive, and violets with firm but integrated tannins. Empreintes and Confidence add complexity of iron, pepper, and graphite. The entry cuvées are more immediately approachable. White Saint-Péray, when it appears, shows rich Marsanne character: beeswax, white flowers, and almond.
