Noël Verset was one of Cornas's legendary vignerons, a self-taught peasant farmer who farmed tiny parcels of ancient Syrah on the steep granite hillsides of Cornas until his retirement in 2000. He sold the majority of his vines to Thierry Allemand, his spiritual successor, though a small amount of wine continues to circulate at auction from his production years. Verset worked from a cramped, rudimentary cellar and practiced what would now be described as natural winemaking — no additions, no fining, no filtration — as a matter of practicality and tradition rather than ideology. His wines, produced in tiny quantities from vines sometimes over 100 years old, have become Cornas's most sought-after bottles. At auction, Verset Cornas averages $717 per bottle across 127 lots, with prices ranging from $32 (likely damaged or compromised bottles) to $1,760. This places him in the company of France's most valuable Syrah producers despite the appellation's historically modest status. Critical endorsement from writers including Alice Feiring and importers like Kermit Lynch elevated his reputation posthumously in the natural wine movement.
