Cornas

Rhône Valley · France · Wine Auction Prices

Cornas is the Rhône's most rugged and concentrated Syrah appellation, producing wine of extraordinary density and longevity from 100% Syrah on granite hillside terraces. The name derives from the Celtic word for 'burnt earth' — a reference to the south-facing slopes' intense solar retention. With 1,500+ lots at auction, the market is anchored by Auguste Clape, whose wines trade at $200–800 per bottle, and a new generation of producers including Thierry Allemand (Reynard, Chaillots), whose tiny production has created extraordinary cult status. Allemand's Reynard regularly trades at $600–1,200 per bottle, rivaling Côte Rôtie's best. The appellation covers just 100 hectares, all farmed by hand on impossibly steep terraces that have sustained viticulture since at least the 9th century.

Cornas
01

Auguste Clape, the guardian of Cornas's reputation through decades of neglect, has farmed his 4-hectare estate since 1955 and produces one of France's most consistent long-lived reds; his 1990 Cornas sold at auction for $800 per bottle in 2022.

02

Thierry Allemand's Reynard cuvée, from less than 2 hectares of old-vine Syrah on pure granite, is produced in quantities under 3,000 bottles; demand drives prices to $800–1,500 per bottle — comparable to northern Rhône's most celebrated wines.

03

Cornas sits in a geographical bowl surrounded by hills on three sides, creating a natural amphitheatre that traps sunlight and heat; the south-facing granite terraces heat to 50°C (122°F) on summer afternoons — extreme even by Rhône standards.

04

The Cornas appellation gained AOC status in 1938 but spent four decades as a source of bulk wine for Lyonnais restaurants; Clape's quality focus in the 1960s–80s, followed by recognition from Robert Parker, transformed its auction status.

In the Glass

Cornas Syrah is the darkest, most brooding wine in the northern Rhône: black olive, smoked meat, dark plum, and iron, with an austere, almost harsh tannic structure in youth. Unlike Côte Rôtie, no Viognier is permitted; the wines are pure, unadorned Syrah character. With 10–20 years, the tannins soften into leather, game, truffle, and dark chocolate of extraordinary complexity. Allemand's is the most detailed; Clape's the most classically structured.
